Safety Standards

Safety is of utmost importance to the U.S. 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion of St. Louis. We understand the risks associated with reenacting and need our members and visitors to understand these risks and the measures necessary to prevent the associated risks and to address them should an accident occur.

  1. The board of the U.S. 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion of St. Louis, Inc. will appoint safety Inspectors. It will be those inspectors' responsibility to conduct safety inspections and enforce all safety regulations at 2nd Ranger events.
  2. Unit Commanders must be at least 21 years of age and agree to be responsible for the actions, safety, and authenticity of all members serving in their unit.
  3. A licensed and insured driver must drive all motor vehicles participating in an event in a sensible manner. The vehicle must also be covered by the owner’s insurance and show proof of such. All wheel vehicles must have at least one ground person. All tracked vehicles must have four ground people. No unlicensed drivers will be permitted to drive any vehicles at any time.
  4. Any vehicle being driven in the field must be proceeded by a ground guide to avoid personnel hiding in the surrounding foliage.
  5. All vehicles must have a modern day fire extinguisher and modern day first aid kit.
  6. Absolutely no ignitable devices are to be thrown into or projected at or near any motor vehicle.
  7. All battles involving possession of one or more buildings must be under the control of one or more neutral observers with the authority to stop all activity for safety reasons. Appointment may be made on site. No blind firing is to be made around corners or over walls.
  8. No alcoholic beverages or controlled substances are to be used at any event. Violation of local ordinances, drunken or disorderly conduct will result in the individual and his unit’s dismissal from the event.
  9. No weapon is to be discharged directly at a person at less than 15 yards (50 feet), as with firing in buildings, no firing around blind corners or over walls.
  10. Any firing closer than 15 yards (50 feet) should not occur, however, if it does, shots should be made into the air or no lower than a 45° angle.
  11. The board of the U.S. 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion of St. Louis, Inc. or its designated safety officers must approve all pyrotechnic devices.
  12. No horizontally fired projectiles (i.e., those fired at a trajectory of less than 45 degrees) are permitted. One exception is permitted, that is foam tipped projectile may be fired directly at a vehicle but not at the vehicle occupants.
  13. All vertically fired projectiles must have approved frangible warheads and cannot weigh over 10 ounces.
  14. No live ammunition is to be brought to an event. Violation of this rule will result in the dismissal of the offender and his unit from the event, immediately. Obvious inert ammunition may be allowed (display ammunition with no primer or drilled casings).
  15. All weapons that fire wood tip blanks must have a shredder.
  16. Affixed bayonets are expressly forbidden.
  17. The use of metal-bodied parachute flares, artillery simulators, or other high explosives "simulators" are forbidden at all events. Devices of this type may be used at staged spectator events under the total supervision of a safety officer providing that they are detonated only in a controlled area. Please refer to the directive on the use and construction of pyrotechnic devices for further details.
  18. Hand to hand combat is not recommended.
  19. Refusal to obey the decision of the Safety Officers will result in a report, requesting the dismissal of the offender and his unit. Any official grievances should be filed with the board within 10 days of the violation.
  20. No Black Powder is allowed for use in any pyrotechnics devices of any kind, ONLY Pyrodex is permitted.
